Term Three 2011



Barney's Janma helped us to create some beautiful

floral decorations using native plants from her garden. We used them to decorate the supper tables at our Marz Production.

Jewish New Year




Nikau and her family shared apple and honey with us to celebrate the Jewish New Year.

Ball skills



This term we have been doing big ball skills with Helen. Lily, Nina, Eva, Barney, Emilie and Sam are playing a game with the rugby ball.

How eggs change





We looked at eggs and how their consistency can change. The egg is protected inside a hard shell.

When the egg came out of the shell it was wobbly and slimy and see through. When we tried to pick it up it felt slippery and gooey.

When we put the egg in a hot pan it started to change. The clear part went white and firm and the yolk went firm too.

Jelly beans



We did an experiment with 4 different coloured jelly beans. We put one colour in each corner of the dish of water and watched what happened to the colours. Look how each colour has spread along each edge of the container.

We made butter by shaking up cream. Tana started by pouring the cream into a big jar.

We had to shake the cream for a very long time to make it go solid. We all had lots of turns shaking the jar. Sam shook it really hard.

The cream began to thicken and then separated out into thicker creamy fat and watery stuff.It is a bit like curds and whey.

Louis poured out the solid cream and let the watery part drain off.

This was the finished butter which we had with on our homemade bread.

yoga




Some of us have been learning to do some yoga poses and stretches with Nikau,s Mum Noa. Jack, Barney, Caden and Tana are all doing the warrior pose.

Trip to Zara's house to milk the cow



At Zara's house her mum Chris showed us how to milk the cow "Tender". She was a bit scared of us so we had to be really quiet. Some of us had a go. Jack said "her udders feel slimy!"

When we had milked the cow with Chris we tasted the milk. Mia said it tasted "warm and creamy" but she wasn't sure she liked it!

Chris showed us how to make cheese out of the cow's milk.

We used the cheese to make a pie



Tana and Caden mashed the potato and pumpkin for the pie.

Nina, Nikau, Layla and Barney all helped to roll out the pastry for the pie.

Caden, Nicola, Shikarma, Zara and Tana all helped put the pastry in the pie dish.

Pacific Dancers



We had a visit from a Pacific Dance group, who showed us different dances from islands of the Pacific. There were three men and three ladies. Their dancing was awesome.

Barney the Maori Warrior



Some kids had a go at being a Maori Warrior. Barney did a great job!

We read "The Gardener's Maze" and then had a go at making our own mazes with the rods. This is the one Scarlett made.

Fractions



We have been working out half of a number. Mia and Nikau are playing a game of "halves" with the beans.

We worked out how to put half the juice into each cup. Layla watched Shikarma and Paris trying to share it equally.

Ice experiments



We had fun experimenting with ice. We found out which things dissolve ice the quickest. Louis, Mia and Nikau watch as Nicola sprinkled on sugar to the icecube.

Printing with Clare




First we had to make a textured background for our prints. We rubbed crayons onto corrugated cardboard.

Lily, Scarlett and Cilla are using their potatoes dipped in the ink to make prints on the paper.

Making rocking birds with Room One




We have been writing and following instructions. When Room One came to visit we made rocking birds. Scarlett and Eva are rolling paper for the tails.



Lily helped her buddy Shikarma glue on the feathers and the beak onto their rocking birds.

Snakes and ladders




Tana, Layla, Nicola and Caden followed the instructions to play Snakes and Ladders.

Zara has been learning which pairs of numbers make ten.

Barney's birthday



It was Barney's birthday and he turned 7!

We had chocolate cake with football candles.

Book Week




Lights, Camera, Action! At the Book Fair we got to dress up and walk along the catwalk. Tana and Barney put on some hats and posed for the camera.

Practising Plays




All week we have been practising reading plays. Layla and Eva and Tana are reading a play called "The Ant and the Grasshoppers."

Book character Day




On Friday we all dressed up as our favourite characters from books.

Kia Kaha with Constable John O'Donavan




Constable John came to talk to us about Kia Kaha. We all have choices and we need to think about doing the right thing.

We acted out what happens when people make different choices. Layla is being mean to Lily and Scarlett tells her "Stop it or I will tell the teacher!"

Week 5 Cross country




We did our cross country. All the classes ran around the track. Room 4 went first, then Room 3 and then it was our turn. We cheered and cheered.

Ready, set, go!




We all raced around the cross country track at Emilie and Nicola's family farm.

Fundamental Skills Games




We are learning lots of new games in Fundamental Skills with Helen. We learnt how to play Brushes and Brooms.
